Why We Do It

  1. In the Gambia, every year hundreds of girls are taken on Female Genital Mutilation; many suffer unnecessarily, are injured and made permanently to lose their sexual feeling from the practice, making them subjects of mockery by their husband for not satisfying and even encountering domestic violence. The fatalities are often aggravated due to general ignorance, incompetent medically unskilled persons, and unsterilized materials used during the process
  2. Another avoidable discomfort WEPF is concerned with, are the wrong decision of taken young girls without their consent and knowledge by parents or elderly people who usually take them to medically untrained FGM practitioners or without even basic health knowledge. These untimely practice can easily be avoided when village elders especially women that have gone through the hard process receive appropriate information on the effects and the problems caused after getting married that enables them to properly recognize the importance of a happy marriage life without going through FGM and its effects.

Because we find life too precious, WEPF was born to help diminish some of the unnecessary suffering described above. In a nutshell, we are trying to make The Gambia a safer and better place.
